How to Renew Your Emirates ID in 2026 — Fees and Steps

By Ahmed Eid, Co-Managing Director, Amer MBS5 min readReviewed Mar 2026 by Mustafa Khairy, Co-Managing Director & Operations Lead, Amer MBS

Your Emirates ID is tied to almost every official transaction in the UAE — banking, phone contracts, government services, even gym memberships. When it expires, you lose access to most of these until the renewal is processed. This article covers when you can renew, how much it costs, the late penalty structure, and where to get it done.

If your ID has expired or is approaching expiry, read this before the fines start stacking up.

Eligibility — who needs to renew

You qualify for Emirates ID renewal if your Identity Card has expired or if less than six months remain before its expiry. This applies to all UAE residents and citizens holding an existing Emirates ID.

There is no minimum residency period or salary requirement. If you hold an Emirates ID that is expiring or has expired, you are eligible.

Required documents

The official ICP sources detail the document requirements for new Emirates ID issuance but do not publish a separate document list specifically for renewals. In practice, the renewal process at Amer centres requires:

  • Valid passport — Your current passport must be valid
  • Current Emirates ID — The card being renewed (expired or near-expiry)
  • Passport-size photograph — Recent, with white background
  • Existing visa page — Copy of your current residence visa

The exact documentation requirements for your specific case may vary. Our team confirms the full list when you visit.

Fees and costs

Base renewal fee

The exact fee for Emirates ID base renewal varies by case — our team will give you the precise figure for your situation.

Late renewal penalties

If you miss your renewal deadline, ICP imposes a monthly fine of AED 100, capped at a maximum of AED 1,000 (10 months of penalties).

1 month: AED 100 per month (penalty)

3 months: AED 300 (penalty)

6 months: AED 600 (penalty)

10+ months: AED 1,000 maximum (penalty)

These are penalty fees, not standard renewal costs.

Typing service fees (DMCC reference)

If you are a DMCC free zone member, the Emirates ID typing service fee through DMCC is:

  • 1-year visa: AED 351.40 (government fee)
  • 2-year visa: AED 451.40 (government fee)

These are DMCC-specific typing fees. Typing fees at other centres may differ.

Process and timeline

The renewal can be completed at an authorized Amer service centre. The general process is:

1. Check your expiry date — Confirm whether your ID has expired or is within the 6-month renewal window 2. Gather your documents — Passport, current ID, photograph, and visa copy 3. Visit an Amer centre — Our team handles the typing and application submission 4. Biometrics — You may need to provide updated fingerprints and a photograph at the centre 5. Payment — Pay the renewal fees plus any applicable fines 6. Receive your new card — The updated Emirates ID is delivered after processing

The official processing time for the new card to arrive is not specified in ICP sources. Processing times can vary.

Common questions

When is the earliest I can renew my Emirates ID?

You can apply for renewal if your ID has expired or if less than six months remain before its expiry date. There is no benefit to waiting — starting early avoids any risk of fines.

What is the fine if I delay renewing my Emirates ID?

ICP charges a monthly fine of AED 100 for late renewals, for a maximum period of 10 months. This means the maximum penalty is AED 1,000. The fine starts accumulating from the expiry date.

Where can I get typing assistance for my Emirates ID renewal?

You can visit authorised service centres such as Amer Smart Lounges, which handle Emirates ID applications, renewals, and updates. Our centre in Ras Al Khor provides the full typing and submission service.

Do I need a medical test to renew my Emirates ID?

If you are renewing your residence visa at the same time, yes. A Medical Fitness Certificate must be issued for all residents of Dubai over 18 for the purpose of issuing or renewing their residence visa. If you are only renewing the Emirates ID card without a visa change, a medical test may not be required — our team confirms this based on your situation.

How much does it cost to type my Emirates ID renewal via DMCC?

The Emirates ID Typing Service fee through DMCC is AED 351.40 for a 1-year visa and AED 451.40 for a 2-year visa. These are DMCC-specific fees.
