Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a work permit and a labour card?

A work permit is the MOHRE authorisation to employ someone — it is the first step. The labour card is the physical/electronic card issued after the work permit is approved, the employee enters the UAE, and completes orientation. Think of the work permit as the approval and the labour card as the proof of registration.

How long does labour card issuance take?

Typing and submission take the same day at Amer MBS. MOHRE processing typically takes 1–3 business days. Total time from document submission to card in hand is usually 2–5 business days.

Can I check my labour card status online?

Yes. You can check your labour card status through the MOHRE website or mobile app using your passport number or application reference number.

What documents are needed for labour card renewal?

For renewal you need: valid passport, current labour card, renewed trade licence, and updated employment contract. Medical fitness may be required depending on your profession category.

What is the difference between Category 2 and Category 3?

Category 2 covers skilled and semi-skilled workers (lower government fees). Category 3 covers domestic workers and certain manual labour roles (higher government fees). Your category is determined by MOHRE based on the job classification.

Can I modify my labour card details?

Yes. Modifications include profession change, salary adjustment, and employer details update. Each modification requires a new application through Tasheel with supporting documents.

What happens if my labour card expires?

An expired labour card means you cannot legally work. Your employer must renew it before expiry. Late renewal incurs MOHRE penalties. Start the renewal process at least 30 days before expiry.
